Welcome to the Model Data Explorer!¶
Warning
Please do not take anything for granted and expect this document to be incomplete as this project is still under active development.
Introduction¶
The lack of standardization of earth system model data in climate research makes it difficult for scientists to effectively share and analyze data, as well as to compare results from different models. Furthermore, it makes it difficult for scientists who are not experts in earth system modeling to use and understand the data. One major issue is the complexity and high workload associated with following conventions such as the CF-Conventions, the INSPIRE metadata standard, and OGC-Services. These conventions provide guidelines for organizing and formatting data, but they can be difficult for researchers to implement due to their technical nature and the pressure to produce results quickly. Additionally, the high volume of data generated by earth system models and the need for supercomputers to analyze this data further complicates efforts to make the data conform to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). Another problem that arises is the risk of errors that can arise from the miscommunication between the scientist that generated the data and the data manager who makes it public. To overcome this, user-friendly and flexible web tools are essential for improving the knowledge transfer to stakeholders such as the general public, other scientists, policy makers and other stakeholders.
The model data explorer (MDE) will help implement these standards and make earth system model data conform to the FAIR principles. This will enable more effective data sharing, collaboration, and dissemination of results in the climate research community, while minimizing errors and inaccuracies, and providing better support for decision-making.
Our framework leverages latest standards for webservices and a is designed in a modular manner such that it can be used at many different research infrastructurs.
Current Status¶
This project is currently under development and we try to be as inclusive as possible.

Note
The model data explorer is mainly developped at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. But we are thankful to be supported and guided by many people from different research centers. We are currently figuring out a way how to acknowledge these efforts in this documentation.
